Discover the Château de Vincennes, its keep and its Sainte-Chapelle during a guided tour!

A symbol of the modern state.

The building asserts royal power: it protects the capital but also guarantees the kings against uprisings. It was the heart of the French monarchy until 1682, when Louis XIV preferred Versailles. The keep was used as a prison from the 16th century until the 19th century: Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade and Mirabeau were all held there. Transformed into barracks and an arsenal by Napoleon I, the fortress protected Paris during the invasions of the 19th century.

At present, only self-guided tours are available for groups at the Château de Vincennes.

Guided tours of the monument will be available again for groups from January 2027.

  • Except in exceptional circumstances, the lecturer's service is valid for a group of no more than 30 people. For groups of 30 or more, a second speaker is required.
