Overview
The Centre des monuments nationaux is presenting an exhibition at the Sainte Chapelle in the Château de Vincennes dedicated to Robert Combas, a leading figure of the Figuration libre movement.
Created in the 1980s, some fifteen of the artist’s iconic works, from the collection of Didier Moiselet, will fill the nave of the building. Among them are huge acrylics on canvas, over two metres tall and rarely exhibited!
Teeming with figures, vibrant colours, and dense, narrative compositions: Robert Combas’s world is revealed here in all its effervescent inventiveness. This selection of works allows visitors to appreciate the artist’s creative power and the significance of his role in the revival of French painting in the early 1980s. Beneath the coloured light filtering through the stained-glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle, a striking encounter between Robert Combas’s earthy world and one of the wonders of French Gothic art!
A few words about the artist
A leading figure on the contemporary French art scene, Robert Combas (born in 1957) is one of the iconic figures of Figuration Libre, a movement he helped to establish in the early 1980s. His instantly recognisable work is characterised by boundless energy, a vibrant colour palette and a free pictorial language, drawing on references to popular culture, comic books, rock music, art history and the great narratives of our time. For over forty years, Robert Combas has been developing a multifaceted body of work in which painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and music interact within a universe of constant inventiveness. Exhibited in numerous institutions and collections both in France and internationally, he occupies a key position in the contemporary art scene.
